MATERIAL COMPARISON / PANELS
Plywood vs. MDF for cabinets.
Choose for the component, not the whole cabinet at once. A case side, painted door and loaded shelf can need different products and details.
Make the comparison specific
| Decision | Veneer-core hardwood plywood | MDF |
|---|---|---|
| What am I buying? | Request the core, face, grade and actual thickness. | Request the manufacturer, product, thickness and technical sheet. |
| What will remain visible? | Check both faces and plan any exposed layered edges. | Include the face and machined edge in a painted sample. |
| How will it be assembled? | Measure the delivered sheet before sizing grooves. | Check the actual panel and hardware instructions. |
| What goes in the budget? | Sheets, edging, machining, finish and delivery. | Sheets, preparation, coating, handling and delivery. |
A plywood face is only part of the panel
“Oak plywood” describes a visible material, not every layer. Columbia's core guide distinguishes veneer and composite constructions. Its documented veneer-core comparison describes lower weight and better spanning behavior than its MDF and particleboard alternatives, with more thickness variation. Those statements do not give every plywood product a permissible shelf span.
MDF is a product category, too
Roseburg lists cabinetry and furniture among Medite MDF applications and supplies product resources by panel variant and manufacturing location. Use the documentation for the product on your quote. A general application list does not resolve a particular hinge layout, long shelf or water exposure.
Example: one painted cabinet, several decisions
Write four lines in your brief: case panels, shelves, doors, and frame or trim. Ask for a quote on a veneer-core case with the planned edge treatment. Ask separately for the intended door product and preparation. If the frame is solid wood, yellow-poplar is another option to investigate.
Compare the prepared components rather than one sheet price. Add edges, primer and topcoat, machining, waste and delivery to the same scope on each quote. Enter buying quantities in the cost worksheet; component counts do not automatically calculate a shopping list.
Before you choose
- Obtain the exact product names and current technical sheets.
- Measure panel thickness before cutting mating parts.
- Check face, edge, hardware and finish details together.
- Record clear shelf spans, loads and support requirements separately.
- Keep quote scope and preparation work comparable.
